Defendant Thomas R. Lawrence was indicted by a federal grand jury for carrying out a scheme to defraud Medicare. Lawrence, a chiropractor, ran a clinic in Denver, Colorado which performed chelation therapy on patients eligible for Medicare. Although chelation therapy is generally not covered by Medicare, Lawrence submitted bills to Medicare indicating the clinic had performed a form of intravenous therapy which was covered by Medicare.
